Next month is the famous annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the biggest and most promising artists are going to perform. Among the big names like Ellie Goulding, Guns N’ Roses, Zedd, Sia, the first ever Korean music group is performing at the popular event. That group? No other than Epik High, one of the most well-known, widely acclaimed Korean hip hop group in the history of modern Korean music. Epik High has been around for about 15 years and in the early days, hip hop wasn’t super popular in Korea. But it was Epik High and a few other extremely talented Korean hip hop artists that formed the genre in the country. Almost anyone who is familiar knows about Epik High because they are just THAT pivotal to the Korean music scene.
The group compromises of MCs Tablo (Stanford University educated) and Mithra Jin with DJ Tukutz. They’re most known for their “sad fun” hip hop, which is more emotionally stirring and catchy than it sounds. Since they started, Epik High gravitate towards addressing heavy and serious topics with smart, creative lyrics and memorable music. Their music has touched people around the globe, so it makes absolute sense for them to perform at Coachella. Last year, their US tour was the biggest one to date for any Korean music group and they performed at SXSW 2015. Coachella, at this point, will most likely have attendants that don’t know much about Korean music at all, which makes Epik High the most sensible introduction to mainstream American music because: 1) their music is catchy, 2) their emotions are relateable and tangible, and 3) they’ve got great stage presence and experience.
I’m so excited for Epik High to perform at Coachella. When I was younger and listened to Korean music, Epik High was (and still is) one of my favorite groups to listen to. I’m glad that they are getting a wider audience through the impressive venue of Coachella and I truly believe they will be received well.
Here are some of my favorite Epik High songs!
