What other organizations are you involved in?
I serve in the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC), which is the student government for UC Berkeley, as one of the twenty elected Senators. I am an officer for the student branches of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA). I am also involved in Livingwater College Fellowship. I like to indirectly help people, and all these organizations help me indirectly help my peers.
Greatest inspiration or passion?
Hmmmm.. I don’t know about greatest inspiration/passion, but I do know that one of the reasons why I keep pushing myself to continue with my current major and my activities is to later support girls that are (interested in) pursuing engineering. Because there are not that many female leaders in engineering, I understand that it can get hard at times without a female role model or adviser who understands.
Any other beautiful things you’d like to share with the world?
In a clip of a psychology lecture that I watched a few weeks ago, the lecturer mentioned that when you experience something, specific parts of your brain are activated. When you see someone else experiencing it, similar parts (that would have be activated if you were actually experiencing it yourself) are stimulated too. For example, experiencing physical pain from a needle will light up this and that area of your brain, and seeing someone else getting poked with a needle will activate the similar area of your brain too. This happens because when you see these experiences, your brain models these situations—as if they were happening to you directly—in your head. Apparently this is why humans are empathetic beings. I personally thought that it was really interesting to hear this because it just emphasized to me the importance of optimism, exposing yourself to positive stimuli, and envisioning your goals/dreams. It gets your head in the game.
So note to everyone: STAY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
